Munich, you beautiful city on the Isar,we at Anansi Tattoo Magazine wish you and ourselves a peaceful and attractive European Football Championship. We hope for great games, and yes: the opening game of the European Championship, Germany against Scotland, is taking place here in Munich. Before it takes place in the evening, I'm sitting here at the Viktualienmarkt and feeling a bit like Michael Graeter, the gifted gossip columnist for the Munich Abendzeitung.
Everywhere I look I see accessories from the epicenter of good taste and the Bavarian way of life: celebrities slurping oysters like there's no tomorrow, stars and starlets looking for lustful prey for the party afterwards, and yes: Scots in skirts that are often so short you'd think they'd misinterpreted the Munich summer. Welcome to the kick-off of the European Football Championship, where Germany meets Scotland and the city is in a state of emergency. Once again, and always with pleasure.
The Scots are here, and they are loud. So loud that the voice-checked market traders in the square could get jealous. We are already in each other's arms and I can see tattoos everywhere - the Scots seem to be a tattoo-loving people. One particularly bizarre sight catches my eye: a Scottish fan with a full beard that looks as if there are still lots of forests in Scotland. Just like ours! A tattoo of Nessi, the famous Loch Ness Monster, is proudly emblazoned on his forearm, accompanied by the profound inscription: "In Football We Trust."
The atmosphere is almost reminiscent of the 2006 summer fairytale, except the weather isn't playing ball yet. Instead of heat, there's humid air. You could almost think Peter was a Scotsman. Every now and then, rays of sunshine peek through the gray clouds. We don't let it spoil our mood. After all, we have the best oysters and the best champagne to keep us warm. And plenty of beer to toast with our new Scottish friends. And to talk about the tattoos on our arms.
Who needs Messi when you have Nessi? And when you're in Munich, a little humor is of course part of it. Of course, the famous "stingy" Scottish joke! At least one has to be made at this point:
Says one Scotsman to another: We recently disbanded our soccer club after almost 50 years of existence. - Why did you do that? - We lost the ball.
With this in mind, my dears, here's to an unforgettable soccer festival. May the games remain exciting, the tattoos artistic and the fans cheerful.
