"Punk's not dead" was the title of the debut album by Scottish punk band "The Exploited", but the musicians around frontman Wattie would probably hardly have believed that the punk subculture would survive to this day when the album was released in 1981.
Punk emerged in the second half of the 1970s in the UK and also in the USA. The derogatory term "punk" used to have a wide variety of meanings such as filth, filth or was also used for prostitutes and homosexuals. However, the new youth movement, which was characterized by an almost blanket rejection of all values and conventions, took the derogatory term almost as a badge of honour; punks or punk rockers felt like the worthless garbage of society, for which they in turn had nothing but contempt and rejection.
However, the term "punk rock" only became common thanks to a music journalist; the musical style of bands such as Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned had previously been referred to as "working class rock 'n' roll".
In contrast to the melodic, pleasing disco music of the 70s or the often epic arrangements of early rock bands, punk rock was deliberately rough, not pleasing and extremely simple. Songs were shouted and screamed rather than sung, and the musicians' mastery of the instruments was not a prerequisite for playing in a punk band.
Stylistically, punks with studs in their leather jackets, heavy boots and shirts with holes in them presented themselves as unattractive and repellent. Tattoos and safety pins through the ear or nose - forerunners of today's piercings - symbolized the rejection of all social conventions. With the mohawk, punks related themselves to the oppressed, but also free and wild peoples of North America.
While punk in its early street punk form was strongly characterized by a pessimistic "no future" attitude, which was also reflected in self-destructive behaviour such as excessive alcohol and drug consumption, more and more positive content began to play a role in the hardcore that followed and within the straight edge movement that in turn followed later.
In the meantime, there are as many variations and subspecies in punk as in other music genres and even after 45 years, the motto that The Exploited chose for their first album still applies: "Punk's not dead!
