Uisce Beatha - the water of life

Whisky? Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is single malt whisky from Scotland - or bourbon from the USA. For many people, when they think of alcoholic beverages, Ireland is more synonymous with Guinness and Kilkenny - but don't be too hasty, because Ireland has nothing to hide when it comes to whiskey! And anyone who has read carefully will have already discovered the first difference to Scottish whiskey, because the Irish "water of life" (the translation of the Gaelic term "uisce beatha", from which the word whiskey is derived) is spelled with an e before the y, unlike its Scottish counterpart. The best-known Irish whiskeys include Tullamore Dew, Connemara and Jameson, and similar to Scottish and US whisk(e)ys, these brands also have die-hard fans who swear by "their" brand - and may even have it tattooed on them.

Tattoo by Tattoo AnansiTheJameson distillery, which was founded in 1780 by John Jameson, is particularly well known to tourists to Ireland for the Old Jameson distillery in Dublin, one of the must-sees in the Irish capital, but this address is now just a show distillery. Unlike many Scottish whiskies or Irish Connemara, the fine blend of malted and unmalted barley is not exposed to smoke during the drying process, which gives the latter its typical smoky taste. The absence of smoke gives the triple-distilled Jameson a milder and more pleasing taste than the smoke whisk(e)ys, which are not everyone's cup of tea.Jameson is also not a single malt but a blended malt - this means that it is not bottled directly from the cask, which results in a more individual taste, but is blended from different casks again and again so that the same typical taste is always achieved, even with the large quantities of industrially produced whiskies.Only barrels previously used for sherry, bourbon or port wine are used for maturation, which release their flavor to the whiskey over the years of storage and maturation.and if you don't want to choose between Guinness and Jameson - there's nothing to stop you enjoying both one after the other!
